What Is the Difference Between an HDD and an SSD?

Hard disk drives (HDDs) store data magnetically on spinning platters. Solid-state drives (SSDs), on the other hand, store data in NAND flash memory and use controllers to manage how data is written, moved, and accessed. Because of these technical differences, HDDs and SSDs need different approaches when it comes to secure erasure.

How Does HDD Data Erasure Work?

For many HDDs, an appropriate overwrite-based sanitization method can effectively remove stored data by replacing the existing information with new data. This is different from simply deleting files or formatting a hard drive. These actions generally remove references to the data rather than reliably sanitizing the underlying storage, which can leave information potentially recoverable with appropriate tools.

The appropriate sanitization method depends on the drive, the type of data being protected, and the required level of assurance. For organizations handling sensitive information, following an established media-sanitization standard is important.

Why Is SSD Data Erasure Different?

SSD data sanitization can be more complex because the drive's controller manages where data is physically stored. Features such as wear leveling distribute writes across different memory cells to help extend the drive's lifespan. SSDs can also use internal storage areas that aren't directly accessible through ordinary read and write operations. 

As a result, simply overwriting the logical address space of an SSD may not address every physical location where remnants of data could exist. Depending on the device and its supported sanitization capabilities, device-level techniques such as block erase or cryptographic erase may be more appropriate than conventional overwriting.

For this reason, HDDs and SSDs shouldn't automatically be sanitized using the same method. The approach should take into account the storage technology, interface, device capabilities, and the required level of assurance.

What About NVMe SSDs?

NVMe is a storage protocol designed for high-speed storage devices, including many modern SSDs. Because NVMe SSDs use flash memory and sophisticated controllers, they have many of the same sanitization considerations as other SSDs. However, the commands and sanitization capabilities available can vary between devices. Effective erasure software should therefore be able to identify and use appropriate sanitization techniques for the specific storage technology and device.
