Even after a Windows computer has been erased and prepared for its next owner, there is one more important step that is often missed: checking the Windows Autopilot registration. If the device is still registered to the previous organization, the new owner may run into issues during Windows setup.

The Hidden Problem with Windows Autopilot
Windows Autopilot lets organizations register and automatically configure Windows computers during setup. This is helpful while the device is in use, but it is important to remove the registration when the computer is decommissioned or passed on to a new user. If the registration is not removed, the computer stays linked to the previous organization. This issue often only shows up when the new owner starts setting up Windows, causing delays for ITADs, leasing providers, MSPs, and their customers.
Check Before the Device Changes Hands
By checking the Windows Autopilot status before transferring a device, you can spot registered computers early. This gives the previous owner time to deregister the device before transfers. With Certus CheckDeviceLock™, organizations can check whether a Windows computer is still registered with Windows Autopilot. If a registration is detected, the device can be flagged and handled before it is transferred.
Designed for Device Processing Workflows
You can easily add CheckDeviceLock™ to your current device processing workflow as an extra check before computers are reused or transferred. Manage device status through Certus DispositionCenter™ and keep everything connected within your Certus environment. If a computer is still registered, the initial check includes a 30-day grace period. If the previous owner deregisters the device within this time, you can refresh its status in Certus DispositionCenter™ without using another license.
Please note that CheckDeviceLock™ does not remove the Autopilot registration. The previous owner or organization needs to complete the deregistration.
Add an Autopilot Check to Your Device Processing
No one wants a device to reach its next owner only to find out about an existing Autopilot registration during setup. By checking the status earlier, you can make device transfers smoother and give your organization better visibility before computers move on.
